FireGPG – finally GPG support in Firefox!

In the past i was using different types of GUI for my encoded mails. I was using Enigmail in Thunderbird for a while, which from my opinion was the most advanced and seemingless integration i’ve ever seen. Short – i loved it.

When i switched to GMail however i couldn’t stay with this solution any more, but i really liked GMail’s functions so i came to use Cryptophane which was kind of a headache with all the c&p stuff.

My first search, some months ago showed up a service called Freenigma. It provided a Firefox plugin which integrated nicely with the GUI of GMail. But they only supported keys generated by their service. As i already had my personal key and didn’t want to change that, and didn’t like the thought of storing my private key somewhere i don’t know, that was no option for me.

Whatever, today i was stumbling over this problem once again and so i started a search on Technorati. What i found was a Firefox plugin named FireGPG which exactly does what i want. Integrate seemingless with Firefox and just give me the ability to encode/decode and sign/verify text. In special it has an integration with GMail which provides buttons directly in the interface to ease the use.

There are still slight problems though:

  • It shows up some command line boxes before starting Firefox (looks ugly)
  • Has problems with unicode in it’s GUI (not showing german umlaute correct)
